WHO IS THE HOLY GHOST?

The Spirit of Jesus, the Spirit of Christ, is the Holy Ghost.

When the Bible speaks about the Spirit of Christ, or the Spirit of Jesus, I believe we are to take it as referring to the Holy Ghost, or the Holy Spirit. Here’s 10 reasons why:

  1. We are told the Spirit of Christ was in “the prophets” of old in 1 Peter 1:10-11, and then in His next letter, Peter tells us that it was the Holy Ghost that moved on them in 2 Peter 1:21.
  1. In John 6:40, we read that Jesus will raise the believer from the dead. We also read in Romans 8:11 that it is the Holy Spirit that will “quicken” (give life to) the dead.
  1. Who raised Jesus from the dead? Romans 8:9-11 tells us it was the Holy Spirit, yet we read in John 2:19-21 that Jesus said He would raise Himself from the dead.

  1. As Christians, we often speak of Jesus in our hearts, other times we say it’s the Holy Spirit in us. There’s good reason for that! John 14:16 says the Holy Ghost abides in us, and Jesus said He would be with those who follow Him in Matthew 28:20 until the end of the world. Then we’ve got Acts 2:4 and Acts 2:38 telling us that believers are filled with the Holy Spirit, but Colossians 1:27 plainly states it’s Christ who dwells in us.
  2. Ephesians 3:16-17 definitively indicates the Spirit of Christ is the Holy Spirit when it says that by having the Spirit in our inner person, we actually have Christ in our hearts!
  1. Who sanctifies the church? It’s Christ in Ephesians 5:26, but it’s the Spirit in 1 Peter 1:2.
  1. Who is our intercessor? The Spirit is in Romans 8:26, yet it’s Jesus in Hebrews 7:25.
  1. The Apostle John recorded Jesus telling His disciples the Holy Ghost was the promised “comforter” (parakletos in the KJV Greek translation) in John 14:26. John later used the same Greek word parakletos translated by the KJV as “advocate” when referring to Jesus in 1 John 2:1.
  1. Jesus told us He would give us our words in times of persecution (Luke 21:15), but we’re told in Mark 13:11 that the Holy Ghost is the one who does that.
  1. John 14:16-18 should be carefully studied: Jesus told His disciples the Father would send another Comforter, and we’re told Jesus was referring to the Holy Ghost. Then Jesus went on to reveal that He would not leave us “comfortless,” but that it was Him who would come to us. I believe we are only left to logically conclude that the other Comforter is Jesus, and that God the Father would be coming in yet another form. Instead of flesh dwelling with humanity (the “Son of God”), the next role or revelation of God would be the Spirit (“the Holy Spirit”). Verse 17 gives us the transition: Jesus told His disciples the Comforter was already with them (God in the flesh) but soon He would be in them (Acts 2:38 – “and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost”). John 16:7 provides more insight in that Jesus explained He had to go away or the Comforter would not come. As long as God was with them in the flesh, He would not be present spiritually in their hearts. However, after Jesus’s ascension, once He physically departed, He was going to send back His own Spirit to be with them.

This series of short articles discusses my view on the oneness of the creator of the heavens and our enclosed plane earth. I do not claim to have the fullest revelation of God. This is my opinion only. For a longer explanation of what I feel strongly the Bible is teaching us, please see “Part 0 – What I Believe” at paulontheplane.com/oneforall
